STATUS REPORT OF OCTOBER 3, 2007

Report of Dr. Owen Hoffman following his presentation to Board on Geographic Names (BGN) of October 3, 2007:

Hi everyone.

I just, some moments ago, completed my 10 minute presentation before the BGN.

There was  a quite large audience of State and international representatives present as well.

I ended up passing out a lot of paper, but I decided that it would be most effective to speak totally without notes using projected digital photos of Carl as a power point backdrop.

I believe  I sensed a very sympathetic reaction to the significance of our proposal and the merit of perpetuating the legacy of Carl's work and inspiration through the official naming of Sharsmith Peak.  I concluded with a slide showing the "Proposed Sharsmith Peak" as identified on Google Earth to demonstrate evidence of  its local usage.

I got a lot of very positive informal feedback from BGN members and members of the audience.  But, based on feedback last evening from Bernard C. (Chick) Fagan, the NPS member of the Board, the absence of a letter of support from the present-day NPS in Yosemite and the strict interpretation of the California Board on Geographic Names against naming features in wilderness for people, our proposal will have a very steep incline to overcome.

I just hope that the very positive feedback I experienced moments ago might make for a positive outcome.

I am most pleased to have had this chance to represent you before the BGN, and I hope my presentation might bring us one step closer to get this peak named for Carl.

In a way, working with Doug's  photos of Carl, putting together the power point progression of photos from 1932 to 19994,  and reading Bill's multiple letters, and re-reading the two books about him, brought Carl back to life in my minds eye.

It was a wonderful experience.

 Owen
